I am a Scottish teacher from East Lothian, near Edinburgh in Scotland and have 30 years experience teaching all age groups from 7 - 17.
Learning should be fun, active and relevant to the lives of the children and to real life itself. Formative assessment is everything, empowering the students to take responsibility for their learning and enabling them to identify their own strengths and weaknesses.
Bachelor of Education degree as an under graduate 30 years ago and a Masters of Education degree as a post graduate - the best thing I ever did.
I trained as a primary teacher originally (elementary) and as there were limited jobs at that time in the early 80`s, I diversified into Secondary education and specialised in Science.I only did this for 3 years before working in Child protection for a number of years. For the previous 15 years I worked with children from primary 2 to primary 7 in Scotland and looking for a new challenge, took on the role as an international teacher in Union county last August. It is so very different teaching here from the point of view of teaching conditions, but teaching is teaching wherever there are children to learn and I love it!
My husband Kenneth has taken an career break and is here with me and has become an unexpected teaching assistant with a creative flair. His two daughters are in their early 20`s and live at home in Scotland and the oldest is due to have our first grandchild any day now. Exciting times! We are very proud of our heritage and thrilled to find so many connections here in North Carolina.
