I try to pass on my enthusiasm for learning--in all subjects, not just English. I have often paused a lesson to address student interests, an interesting bug worthy of observation. I am a middle-school-aged child at heart, and I am interested in everything. I like to validate my students interests and help them find connections between them and their learning. I like to front-load information, set my students up to succeed, and then get the hell out of their way. I use cooperative learning, project-based learning, minilessons, workshop models, and unabashed silliness and humor as the staples of my classroom. If I'm bored, they are, too. Nobody wants that. Enthusiasm is contagious.
