I began as a K-12 Spanish teacher, teaching in grades K-5. When our elementary Spanish program was cut, I switched to high school ESL. From there I started teaching ESL in grades K-5 and finally I spent 6 years as an administrator. I am happy to say that for the last 2 years, I have taught ESL K-5 again, and I'm loving it! All this adds up to a 22+ year career as a teacher of foreign language!
I prefer to use techniques that appeal to many different learning styles and personalities. Each child is different, and what works on one does not necessarily work on another. I like to use TPR, realia, drawings and stories, and lots and lots of visuals!! I like to do schoolwide things like Cinco de Mayo or Mardi Gras celebrations in order to make the ESL children feel that they are a part of the total school environment.
I have received several grants and am affiliated with several frateral organizations. My children received the highest ESL scores in the county in the 1998 school year.
I was "raised" in a university training school. I spent grades 1-5 at that school, and feel that I was taught well. I was able to compete with those who had attended public schools with no problem. At the age of 11, our family moved to South Carolina, where I began to attend public schools. I continued in the public school system until my graduation in 1973. I attended college at Clemson University, earning my BA in Spanish. Later, after my career got started, I earned an MA in English at Western Carolina University and an Ed.S. in Educational Administration from Western as well. I have always had ADD, and that had adverse affects on me as a student. It is still very hard for me to control the ADD, but I am at least aware of it and can catch myself if I find that I am too impulsive, or if I am too easily distracted. I tend to pull for the underdogs for that reason.
I ADORE spiders and tarantulas of all kinds. I own 10 tarantulas and counting. In my spare time my tarantulas and I "teach" children in the area about spiders. We do volunteer work with a local children's museum. I hope to add biology to my certificate and start teaching biology!
