I am currently teaching High School English for English learners, as well as co-teaching U.S. History and Biology. This is my 29th year in education. I have taught Spanish, English and English as a Second Language, and I have co-taught U.S. History, Biology, Chemistry, Earth Science, 7th grade math, Intro. to Algebra and Algebra I. I have also been a professional English tutor at a local college. In addition to my teaching experience, I served as department coordinator for 8 years in a high school EL program. Currently I am the department PLC facilitator, and I am on the district SEL committee. We are currently piloting SEL assessments.
My first goal is to lower the stress bar when students come in. We do frequent "what's on your mind?" check-ins. Then we can be productive. I am big on planning--the best intervention is prevention! Having said that, my current students throw me lots of curve balls so I am flexible to adapt to their needs. I want my students to be engaged so I get them to do the talking and interacting with each other as much as possible.
