I have been working in urban education in Boston Public Schools for five years and started my sixth year in Cambridge public schools. Currently I am working in an alternative high school piloting a project based learning curriculum. In the past I have worked in a full inclusion, low-income school providing special education in science to students. Although we might not always have all the resources we need my passion is helping my students realize their full potential. I love creating labs and projects to help them engage in science and become excited and happy to be in class. My goal here is to share these hands on projects with you and bring the joys of science to every school. Prior to teaching I was completing my Ph.D at Tufts Medical Schools researching vascular smooth muscle and implications in diabetic retinopathy and uterine fibroids.
I love hands on labs and critical thinking. Science is one of the few subjects where you get to do hands on activities, building things, blowing things up and launching them into the sky. This should be the best subject in school and I'm here to help you get this type of activity in action. All of my labs focus on student centered learning, with high level reading, critical thinking and math application in physics. At our school, the focus is on reasoning. All of my lessons focus on asking students "Why?" and getting them to do the heavy lifting in the lessons.
I led an international service learning trip to Ecuador for our students where they worked in the Amazon Basin building a medical clinic for local villages. As a low income school, we had to fund raise over $30,000 for the trip. I have also raised thousands of dollars on Donors Choose for my students through dozens of projects and have been interviewed on television, The Boston Globe and the radio for my work with them.
