Hello, my name is Mrs. Corning at school, where I have taught K-12 art in the for over 20 years, and Adult Ed for one year. I have focused primarily on building art skills and methods and vocabulary, including the color wheel, painting methods, drawing illusions of 3D through shading and perspective, as well as studying the art masters. For holidays I have diverted lessons to create holiday related crafts or greeting cards. Field trips to art museums were part of the curriculum. Sometimes I was called upon to lead my students in creating backdrops and props for school plays, including posters for advertising. For the past couple years, I have been volunteering as a helper in K-second grades, two days a week. The teacher waits until I arrive to tell me what she needs from me that very day, most usually an art related project. I have drawn a life size Goliath, helped children paint the planets, led them in building a town using little boxes, and made a bookcase into a fireplace to hang their Christmas stockings using construction paper. Most recently, I drew templates of astronauts who walked on the moon, for the students to color. In other words, if their teacher can think up something, I can create something for her class that is fun, beautiful and thrills everyone involved.
I assume that there is an artist in every child just waiting to be inspired to come out. I also believe that the best way to become an artist is to learn the basic learning blocks of art, not just throw something together because "It feels right." Just as you need to learn the alphabet, then how to construct good paragraphs before you can be a good writer, even so, it is my desire to train children to learn basic art skills that can be built upon, even while being creative.
Yet to be added
I have a B.A. in Art from the University of Maine at Orono. Before that, my mother made sure I had gone to plenty of art classes and art museums. And I took an art correspondence course during high school, since my school did not have any art curriculum. In 2004 I took a watercolor class to hone my skill, and created my masterpiece, a painting drawn from the subject of the movie Master and Commander.
I sell paintings and painted rocks at my on line art store on Etsy, and join my daughter at craft shows where I sell painted rock owls, seascapes, and animals painted on old roof slates. I grew up in Maine, and love the seacoast, which gives me plenty of inspiration to paint ships and sailboats. I also love cartooning and caricatures. I and my husband have been married for over 38 years, and have 4 fantastic children, two of which are teachers, and 5 grandchildren, all of which are in school now. I have had the fun pleasure of teaching my children art as they came into my classes over the years. Now I enjoy seeing my grandchildren in school, too; and I volunteer to help teach Math and Phonics centers in first and second grade. There I also am on board for arts and crafts projects their teacher needs to have me come up with, such as the widely popular Flat Stanley Friends.
