This is part of my community thematic unit. This is great to be used for a close read during shared or even small-group reading. It focuses on what a city council is, along with its roles and responsibilities.

This handout looks at the roles & responsibilities of the Mayor and City Council, using two graphic organizers. Students can use a T-Chart on one side, and a Venn Diagram on the other. This activity would go very well with my other text reads

Customize your thematic unit!! Thematic units are nothing new, but many schools are making "the switch" to more unit planning in an attempt to cover as much curriculum as possible. One of the first steps is creating a unit plan template. This is

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been working in schools for 14 years! I started as a classroom assistant for multi-needs students (students with Down's Syndrome, Autism, PDD, etc). After doing that for 6 years, I became a classroom teacher. I have taught Kindergarten (2 years), 1st (2 years), 6th (2 years), and 2nd (2 years). I seem to have found my home in 2nd and will be making resources primarily for this grade level.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Engagement, Engagement, Engagement! I use Kagan structures throughout the day to increase participation, hold students accountable, increase oracy skills in my ELL students, and increase engagement. I also *LOVE* to throw in activities that are going to keep kids on their toes- use giant dice? Task cards posted around the room? Glow sticks to read with? Room transformations? YES- YES- YES! We make magic happen in our room every day!

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Nothing official yet, but I get told daily by my students that I'm the best teacher ever- do that's pretty much the same thing! :)

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I did my undergraduate work at Elmhurst College. Then, I received my MA in curriculum and instruction w/ ELL endorsement from Concordia @ Chicago. As stated already, I have also attended MANY Kagan trainings and am an active Kagan coach.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a busy wife and mother of 2 school-age girls. My girls are always active and I'm constantly running all over the place. I am the type that I HATE to do my work at home because when I'm home- I'm mom. I try VERY hard to balance teaching, working, and being with my family. You can check out my blog to see how I do it: http://brumbrumsjourney.blogspot.com/
