I spent nine years teaching Spanish, writing Spanish curriculum and working with middle school students. I taught in a proficiency-based, communicative Spanish program with a focus on helping students function as fully as possible in the target language. I don't believe in using English in the classroom. The Knollwood World Language Program uses a thematic approach to instruction and assesses students in the three modes of communication using performance-based assessment tasks that are tied to the thematic units. Embedded within the units are engaging and culturally authentic tasks. It is important to note that teachers have participated in extensive professional development activities related to understanding the relationship between proficiency levels and student performance as well as the most recent pedagogical approaches to language learning. All classes are conducted in the target language.
Firm, but awesome.
