TEACHING EXPERIENCE

MICHAEL MULHEARN: I am an L.A. based actor. I graduated from Millikin University with my BFA in Acting. I found further training with the leading professionals at Shakespeare's Globe Theatre (London) and The Second City in Chicago's Musical Conservatory. I've performed in a plethora of professional plays and musicals as well as a few independent films. Shake It Off Shakespeare began when Denise Rewers invited me to lead her 8th grade students in a fun and interactive workshop about Shakespeare. We soon found that the excerices I brought, and more, were an excellent way to help reinforce something so complex and often difficult to grasp. DENISE REWERS: I am a 7/8th grade literacy teacher in a Chicago Public School. I pursued teaching as a second career which allows me to grow my personal love of reading as well as try to reach a diverse groups of students with books as varied as they are. I love reading with them and to them and listening to their discussions grow as our time together passes. Whether it is helping a reluctant reader find that author or series that clicks with them or sitting around discussing high school level texts with my high performing students, I find each day of teaching challenging and rewarding at the same time. As an undergrad, one of my favorite classes was devoted to Shakespeare; reading, watching and discussing his works led to eventually watching the Royal Shakespeare Theatre perform Henry V in Stratford Upon Avon. Now as a middle school teacher, I have made it a goal to introduce The Bard to my students so that when they encounter him again in high school, they are prepared to discuss his plays rather than trudge through the Elizabethan language. Collaborating with Michael Mulhearn in his creation of "Shake It Off Shakespeare" has been a highlight of my teaching career. This is not because I was allowed to be a little creative in working with an actor, but my students seem to love this approach to Shakespeare. My student population is composed of Chinese bilingual, diverse learners, average and above grade level learners. "Shake It Off Shakespeare" makes learning about Shakespeare's works much more approachable for these teens and utlimately helps them find success in their future readings of his works.
