TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've taught 1st grade for 14 years. Because of a growing concern for the many students that struggled with reading, spelling and writing, I continued my education to become a Certified Academic Language Therapist or Dyslexia Therapist. I now teach K-6th grade dyslexic students. I developed my products from the strategies I teach my dyslexic students for reading and spelling. These strategies have been helpful for all students. I have taught non-dyslexic, gifted/talented, and students who simply struggle with spelling/reading with great success. Now I want to share these strategies with you through helpful activities, word sorts, the spelling notebook & more! I have found my passion in helping young learners become successful in spelling and reading!

MY TEACHING STYLE

Every student has the ability to be a Forever speller if they are given the opportunity to learn the rules of spelling. True spelling instruction is not being taught in the schools today. Connecting the sound to the letters that spell that sound is a more concrete way for a child to learn all the seemingly complex rules of the English language. There are patterns within the rules for spelling in Initial, Medial and Final positions in words that ensure learning of these rule possible for elementary aged students through Adult-age students.

2013-14 - Bell Ringer Award, Allen ISD - for going above and beyond to help improve our school's spelling curriculum.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

Studied at Wayland Baptist University. Received a BS-Ed. Studied at The Shelton School and The Texas Scottish Rite Hospital, Luke Waites Dyslexia Center and received my certification in Dyslexia Therapy. I am an ALTA member.

I totally understand b/c I faced this each year I taught 1st Grade!! I want to share with you what I have learned & use with success in my classroom to help my struggling students. Please feel free to check out my FB Page, Turning Around Dyslexia where I share my tips, tricks and resources for enhancing spelling & reading instruction. I have a HUGE passion to help improve how spelling is taught in K-3rd grade. This is why I create the products in my store. It all started at my end of the year Summative meeting with my principal. Data showed a decrease in spelling scores, so we brainstormed and a plan was made to integrate a phonics approach into our spelling curriculum! The products I create have been used in the classroom & are proven to enhance the teaching of spelling, but most importantly, is helping students develop useful spelling strategies to use their whole lives!!
