I have 17 years of teaching experience as a High School Special Education teacher. I have taught in self-contained classrooms for students with behavior problems, resource rooms for students with various learning disabilities, and in-class support classes for Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, Geometry, Earth Science, Oceanography, World Cultures, US History 1, and computer courses on all Microsoft Office programs.
I always try to challenge my students and teach them to overcome their learning disabilities. I remind my students that they shouldn't be using their disabilities as a crutch; that instead they should prove to others that they can do anything their peers can do. For these reasons, I modify the general education curriculum to meet the needs of my students, yet I still am able to cover all of the material that their peers are learning. I encourage my students to do their math work on paper (or in their heads if they are able to do it), instead of relying on a calculator.
