TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been a Middle School teacher for 11 years, teaching Special Education in Self Contained Classrooms. I began my teaching career as a teacher in a classroom for students with behavioral challenges and then moved to a Functional Academics classroom. Currently, in the Functional Academics classrooms I work with students with a wide range of disabilities who are at least four years below grade level. However, I do have a few students who go out to General Education classes and I am responsible for modifying their assignments to meet the standards of an alternative curriculum.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I treat each student as if they were my own. I love each and everyone of them. Because I teach in a Functional Academics classroom, we are focusing on those functional skills that will help these sweet kids attain some form of independence in their lives. I love to do a lot of hands on work. I think that it makes the lesson more meaningful for them.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I have been awarded grants by our PTA for the last 10 years for various projects in my classroom. I have also been awarded a grant by the Down Syndrome Guild of Dallas to create an innovative online Reading Program for my kids.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received both my BS and MS from Texas Tech in Human Development and Family Studies. While working on my Masters and PhD I was involved with numerous research projects. One in particular, The Socio-Emotional Development of Infants was featured on the Today Show and was later compiled into a book and published by my professor.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I love Special Education and there is nothing else I could see my self doing. I have a wonderful son who is Autistic and feel that being a Special Education teacher was a calling. While I was pregnant with him, I had a strong sense that teaching special needs children was what I needed to do. And, I am so thankful that I listened to that calling. I feel completely blessed to work with these sweet kids each and every day.
