My professional experience includes more than twenty years of experience as a classroom teacher in elementary and middle schools. I have taught in both affluent and title I schools. My experiences have included teaching gifted and talented students, special needs students, and in between students. I have shown leadership in teaching new career teachers, using technology in the classroom, developing powerful lessons and literacy pedagogy.
All children can be successful in the classroom and they each bring unique gifts. I love the art of teaching, watching the joy of learning, and thrive on the challenges each day brings. Whenever possible, I "flip" the classroom using technology. Integrating subjects is meaningful for students. The last twelve years I have taught at International Baccalaureate schools. I use Whole Brain Teaching classroom management style as developed by "Coach" Chris Biffle.
I graduated with honors with an M.A.T. degree from the University of South Carolina. I hold National Board Certification Early Adolescence English Language Arts. I have participated in, and led, countless workshops, many of which involved using technology in the classroom. Serving as team leader, curriculum head, and hosting student teachers has grown my practice. I am currently a lead writing teacher in my school district.
I hold a B.A. in Art Studio and Graphic Design and worked for several years as a graphic designer. Hearing "the calling," I enrolled in an M.A.T. program in Elementary Education. I added Middle School Endorsement, Gifted and Talented Endorsement, as well as Art Education K-12. I have completed 30 graduate hours beyond my master's degree.
I love teaching and sharing my effective strategies with others. Through great lessons, we can have a significant impact on the lives of our students, regardless of background or learning styles. I am married to a real estate agent and we have two children who grew up to be English majors in college. Our daughter works in human resources with volunteers, and our son is an educator at a children's museum.
