I have been teaching in the public school system for 24 years. Reading/ELA is my specialty, although I have taught the other subject areas as needed.
I tend to use more non-traditional style of teaching in my classroom. I use the Reading/Writing Workshop method exclusively, having discarded all basal readers nearly three years ago. I allow my students to move around the classroom during reading and writing blocks, using bean bag chairs, beach chairs, stools, carpet squares, pillows, etc. to be comfortable. Many students choose to lay under tables and desks, with the exception of my table because I use it for small group and individual reteaching.
I have been included in the Who's Who Among America's Teachers five times, nominated by students who are in the top ten percent of their graduating class. (Teaching 4th grade, I am tickled they remember me by the time they graduate!)
I have a BS in Education and an MS in Education, both from Indiana University. I am still contemplating another degree, but until my youngest heads off to college, that dream is on the back burner.
