I have taught inner city school children for 17 years. I believe in keeping lessons student centered and interesting. I hold a Master's degree in English plus and a Reading Certificate. Following is a list of the subjects and skills I have studied and acquired: literacy strategies, adolescent brain based learning, rigor and relevance training, Collin’s writing system, Glasser behavioral training and choice theory, Schlechty lesson design qualities, culturally relevant teaching, subject, self and social curriculum design, History Alive, positive discipline and classroom management training, training to teach gifted learners, inclusion teaching and subject differentiation, designing for the interdisciplinary classroom, teaching to multiple intelligences, research into best practices
I believe in student based teaching. I try to involve students in the learning by designing creative lesson plans that appeal to different types of learning styles. Students learn in various ways and at different paces. If a student does not understand a concept, the teacher must be willing to step back, identify the problem area, and try a different approach.Trying a new methodology requires an arsenal of knowledge and approaches. It may also require a teacher to step outside of his or her comfort zone from time to time, and a teacher must be willing to do this.
