I have tutored students from Grade 2 to Grade 6 in remedial reading for the county of San Diego. I have also taught English as a Second Language to adults in a classroom setting. I have found that teaching phonics is essential for developing reading skills and also very helpful in improving spelling skills and for ESL students in pronouciation.
I like to make the learning process fun. I use various games for the younger students. I present several short games along with oral exercises. For the second graders I try several different approaches during a session to keep their interest. I like to give them self confidence and I use different levels in one session. I assess their abilities and then I slip in some more difficult material. I give them lots of encouragement.
