Member of Sigma Delta Pi. The National Collegiate Honor Society in Spanish honors those who attain excellence in Spanish and the literatures and cultures of Spanish-speaking people. The honor society also seeks to recognize those who have made Hispanic contributions to modern culture better known in the English-speaking world. It also encourages college and university students to acquire a deeper understanding of Hispanic cultures. To qualify for induction, students must be juniors or above with a minimum overall grade point average of 3.2. They also must complete at least 18 credits in Spanish at the 200 level, including two semesters of advanced Spanish and advanced Hispanic literature. The national society established in 1919 at the University of California, Berkeley and is the only national or international honor society devoted exclusively to students of Spanish in four-year colleges and universities. It is the largest foreign-language honor society in existence, with more than 430 chapters in colleges and universities across the nation and abroad. The Quinnipiac chapter of Sigma Delta Pi held its first inductions in 1998.
