TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have been teaching for 29 years in elementary education. I have also taught at the college level for Teacher Education and training courses through UCLA. I have taught mostly grades 4 and 5 in a looping program allowing me to keep my students for 2 years. I am a teacher of Gifted and Talented students and have had extensive training in that field and in Culturally Relevant and Responsive Instruction.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe in T.E.A.M. (Together Everyone Achieves More) and building a community of encouraging and willing learners. I always refer to my students as The Joyteam, thus expecting and developing team spirit throughout our learning journey. Collaborative learning and my high expectations have yielded positive results for my students and for me for over 25 years.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

I am a National Board Certified Teacher since 2000 and renewed my certification in 2010. In September 2012, I was awarded and distinguished as District Teacher of the Year and Los Angeles County Teacher of the Year. In 2001, I was awarded a Colonial Williamsburg grant to study colonial history in Williamsburg, and in 2004 I was awarded a grant to attend North Carolina's Thomas Day Summer Institute.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I attended public schools in the district where I currently teach. I received my bachelor's degree from UCLA, my master's degree and teaching credential from Cal State Dominguez Hills. I am a UCLA Writing Project Fellow as well as a History Project Fellow.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

As a National Board Certified Teacher and 2012 L.A.County Teacher of the Year, I consult with many educators on varying topics across grade levels and disciplines. I provide workshops on Novel Studies and poetry, and have had some of my poetry recited in schools across my district.
