I am a third grade teacher in Georgia. I have 28 years experience teaching. My experience: 1 year teaching Fourth grade and Art, 2 years teaching PreK and first, 3 years teaching Kindergarten, six years teaching third grade, and seven years teaching second grade. I've also taught Adult Ed. classes(ranging from non-readers to students preparing for the GED) for three years. I have spent a great portion of my life also teaching Sunday School, Training Union classes, children's choir, and playing piano for my church.
Motivate. Challenge. Support. Children are naturally curious (nosy!) and should be made to feel secure physically, then emotionally so they can begin to grow and exceed intellectually. Learning to read is more easily accomplished with loads of motivation and support. Most students challenge themselves enough without any pressure from me. I can and do challenge students who plateau, but always work to do so in a positive, supportive manner. I firmly believe in scaffolding: do it for me, do it with me, then stand by quietly and offer support while I do it myself.
