4 years as a teacher and now I am the curriculum director and lead teacher at a small, private school.
I believe in Hands - on! I know sometimes we can not turn our lessons into hands - on work, but if we can keep and upbeat and fun style, your students will be still into what you are teaching. I have gone as far as dressing up as historical people we are learning about to having my students write sight words in pudding they just made for math, that was over measurements. I also started the Help box. When a student does not get something, but does not want to say out in class. They may put a note, with their name on it, in the help box. Then we make a special time to sit down and study together..
My awards are the smiles and hugs I get everyday from my students. If I was paid that way, I would be a very rich teacher!
I started out going to NCTC for Equine training and management. I had done that for a couple of years and loved it, horses are my other passion. I guess when I was offered to be a part of the new school I'm at, I suggested we had some horses, they agreed! Along with our other educational farm animals! Yep, no student of mine is ever going to say cows milk is their pee, or think we are singing about McDonalds the fast food, instead of Old McDonald's farm. I was in a bad car accident that ended my horse training days, so I went back to school and got my Culinary degree. I thought I was going to be the next Gordon Ramsey, but as a woman and with pasties and cakes, plus a whole lot nicer. This dream did not last very long, maybe a little over two years after graduation? It was not what I was meant to do. Plus 80 hours, no holidays or ever seeing your family was very hard on me. So I looked on to my next Passion, teaching! I come from a long line of teachers, all the way up to the one room classroom during the Pioneer days. So once again I took to the books, and now 5th year into it I'm enjoying being the curriculum director, teacher, and horseback riding instructor at my new school. I am very excited for this new school and the great teaching adventures that it brings!
If anyone has a request, please feel free to ask. FYI, I love to draw too!
