I was a home-instruction teacher for students on Long Island, teaching middle school and high school science, math and health. Before homeschooling, I taught middle school science in Rockaway Park, Queens.
I like to use student-centered and skill-based teaching methodologies, emphasizing critical thinking, problem-solving and group collaboration. I believe it's important to keep students engaged with hands-on activities and to provide relevance of class material to the world beyond the classroom. I try to encourage students to become reflective leaders who can create a positive learning experience in any academic environment.
I was a New York City Teaching Fellow and nominee for Teaching Fellow of the Year. I received two Americorps Educational Grants and two Adopt-a-Classrooom grants. I was inducted into Sigma Pi Sigma (National Physics Honor Society) and was listed to Who’s Who of Professional Women.
I graduated from Siena College with a Bachelor of Science with degrees in Biology and Physics. I completed a Masters of Science Education in Secondary Education and Youth Services with a concentration in General Science and Biology from CUNY Queens College.
I am a proud mom, stepmom and wife who loves creating educational resources on TpT. Need to email me? Contact me at dsj.elkowitz@gmail.com.
