This is a project that I use in my 8th grade English/U.S. history course. We read "I Hear America Singing" by Walt Whitman and then "I, Too, Sing America" by Langston Hughes, and then students are assigned this project.
Unlike a book summary, this gets students thinking more deeply about what they are reading. I assign this every few weeks to check up on what students are reading and how they are thinking about their reading.
