My time as a professional educator (over 16 years) has taken me from South Carolina to Wisconsin, teaching a variety of ages and subject matter in several different atmospheres. I have taught Advanced Science, Math, Geography, and was given the privilege of creating a complete drama program from the ground up for grades 6-8. After several years there, marriage brought me to Wisconsin, where I had the privilege of working in the Madison Metropolitan School District at two phenomenal schools, Spring Harbor and JCW Middle School. During my time there I taught Math, Theatre, Health, worked with students on reading, and wrote an original play to celebrate the life of James C. Wright, the school’s namesake. After our second child was born, I started working from home, focusing on creating and teaching online writing classes as well as creating instructional courses for teachers all over the world with Theatrefolk, an educational and play publishing company based in Canada. I teach acting to ages 5-18 at Forte Studios in Mt Horeb. I also focused on creating plays for students that are fun, clever, challenging, appeal to their unique experiences, and perhaps even teach important lessons if you look deep enough.
I have a flexible style of teaching that focuses on: 1. Creating connections 2 Direct and honest feedback 3. A willingness to go where the flow takes us 4. Creating a "community of one" 5. Having students own their thoughts, their actions, their effort, and their truths. 6. Creating a fun environment where anything can happen.
I have now published 23 plays or scenes that have been performed in 43 states and 10 countries. I also recently completed my first novel, The Bottom of the Lake, based on one of my most popular plays.
I graduated from Newberry College with a major in Elementary Education and a minor in Theatre. I also have a master's degree in Divergent Learning, a program that opened my eyes to the complexities of working with the entire student population and provided me with many tools that helped evolve my teaching.
I live in Wisconsin in a cabin in the woods with my wife, two daughters, and two cats named Pants and Ralph.
