I taught kindergarten for 11 years, first grade for 7 years, and am now going into my third year teaching second grade.
I have found that explicit instruction works the best for teaching conventions, especially for English language learners and children who haven't been exposed to much writing. I also think children need to be engaged in writing about topics that are meaningful to them.
My school is the recipient of the 2014 National School Change Award. We were the first in Washington State to ever earn it. We were also a Washington State School of Distinction 3 years in a row. I'm proud to be part of this fantastic team of educators! I'm grateful for a principal who has allowed me to experiment with teaching writing for 16 years to see what works best.

I live on 2 acres near Olympia, Washington with my husband, who is an artist, and some geese and alpacas. I live in the neighborhood where I teach and I love seeing past and present students when I take a walk or bike ride.
