We are a dual language team - four years running! Teaching in a two-way Spanish-English dual immersion program keeps us both on our toes.
Our teaching style is inspired by the great bilingual thinkers and teachers before us. Teaching for Biliteracy, and Biliteracy from the Start inform our teaching and create a research-based foundation for our classroom practices. Tying in modern, fun, and engaging activities are our specialties. A focus of our work is to highlight the connection between the two languages that our students are learning. By making this connection explicit, a deeper understanding is created that helps learning both the home and target languages. We hope to spread the bilingual joy and to share our work with other teachers forging the same path as ours.
We have presented at our statewide Foreign Language conference and have been delighted to attend La Cosecha when we are able. Our Spanish half is working toward a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in bilingual studies. Our English half has National Board Certification.
Sra Spanish was born in Puerto Rico and spent time in both the mainland US and PR in her youth. She studied at Penn State, receiving her masters in Educational leadership. Mrs. English grew up between small town New Hampshire and sprawling Tidewater, VA. She received a masters in Special Education at Virginia Tech.
It's a happy accident that the two of us came together to teach budding bilinguals in Charlottesville, the heart of Virginia.
