Objects of prepositions are nouns that have gone bad. They hang out with the adjective and adverb crowd, and they love to confuse and distract us when we search for subjects, direct objects, indirect objects, and predicate nominatives—good nouns

About Our Company

I'm Bill Miller, a language arts teacher from Rapid City South Dakota, and I'd like to tell you about an old pair of hiking boots I own, They have a fabric membrane inside that theoretically makes them waterproof. I've come to believe that every student in my English class owns a pair just like them, and that a good number of these learners have splashed their way across the language arts fork of the Curriculum River repeatedly without even once getting their feet wet. My old hiking boots generally do a good job, but I've found that leaving them for a while in a strong current will let water seep in. If we want to let the water seep on and really soak some toes, we need to ford our hikers frequently and unhurriedly across the narrowest and deepest sections of the language arts watercourse where full immersion and strong swimming skills are the order of the day. Current language arts waterways are an inch deep and a mile wide. Overburdened curriculum demands continually put English teachers in a quandary. We can choose to teach a few programs well at the expense of others, or we can use our limited time and resources to cover everything lightly. Should we choose the latter, our hikers once again splash their way across the shallows, and the water invariably soaks into the shoreline instead of the shoes. Today's language arts textbook publishers encourage splashing, not swimming. They are far too stingy with the crucial resources required to introduce, reinforce, and maintain a viable language arts curriculum. Practice does indeed make perfect, and our hikers are basically stranded high and dry on the banks until textbook publishers and other members of our education community learn to present the language arts curriculum in a logical and sequential order, provide abundant skill building and practice opportunities, and supply generous review and skill maintenance options. Syntax for Sailors features logical and sequential lesson presentation; abundant skill building and practice opportunities; and generous review and skill maintenance options. You get the resources you need to get the job done right!

MY TEACHING STYLE

I’ve been very fortunate to work without adult supervision for most of my 35 year teaching career. It’s not that I didn’t have principals and assistant principals visit my room on occasion to evaluate the teaching act, I just never had micro-managers around to throw the monkey wrench into anything that seemed different or innovative.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

My colleagues supported my nomination for West Middle School’s Teacher of the Year Award and for Rapid City’s Teacher of the Year Award one year later. I think it’s important for you to know that my fellow professionals thought enough of my work to accord me these honors, and I think it’s important for you to know that my fellow teachers asked me to share some“secrets of my success” with them at our August English in-service workshop. ("If English is such a rich, dynamic, and versatile language, why are we keeping it a secret?")

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a certified weapon of mass instruction with a Master's degree in English Education and over three decades of middle school classroom experience. My lessons cost more because they have been classroom tested and forged in the crucible of trail and error. My lessons cost more because they feature logical and sequential presentation; abundant skill building and practice opportunities; and generous review and skill maintenance options. My lessons cost more because they are the end result of an incredible amount of time, energy and hard work. I'd appreciate your review! Bill
