TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught every level of math, from basic arithmetic to college calculus, for over twenty years. I have developed curriculum, assessments, and instructional materials for multiple publishing companies and for my own district since 1998. I currently teach AP AB Calculus at an urban high school in addition to acting as an Instructional Support Trainer for my district, where I work to train teachers on CCSS implementation and in pedagogical improvement on both the elementary and secondary levels.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I have taught in a variety of formats, ranging from traditional lecture to the new "flipped" courses now being offered. I believe that a teacher's style must continually evolve to meet the needs of his/her students. I also believe that success in mathematics stems from building connections to existing background knowledge and skills, and that equipping students with rich examples, timely feedback, and multiple opportunities to practice is the most effective way to learn new content.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Received four year mathematics scholarship to the University of Utah; graduated Magna Cum Laude in the space of three years. Also received full scholarship assistantship for Master of Science in Mathematics. Member of Phi Eta Sigma Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, Golden Key National Honor Society, Associated Women in Mathematics, American Mathematical Society, Idaho Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. Vice President of Graduate Student Advisory Committee, University of Utah, 1991 and 1992. Dean’s List, University of Utah, 1987 to 1992, and Dean’s List, Boise State University, 1992 to 1994. Recipient of Outstanding Mathematics Teacher Award, University of Utah, 1992. Recipient of Teacher of the Year Award, Hillside Junior High, 1993. Multiple year honoree in Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers. Recipient of Coca-Cola’s Teacher of Distinction Award, 2005. Outstanding Teacher Award from University of California, San Diego, 2006, US Presidential Scholar Teacher Recognition Award, 2007, and Rotary Club Teacher of Distinction Award, every year since 2004.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have both a BS and MS in mathematics from the University of Utah.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I am a veteran AP AB Calculus teacher who has studied every released exam available to educators in an effort to help my students prepare for the format and difficulty of the AP exam. Toward that end, I have used what I've learned to create original lessons, AP style multiple choice questions, and free response problems along with their associated scoring rubrics. Pick any topic in the AP AB Calculus curriculum, and I can provide resources for instruction, assessment, and practice. I have developed materials in Word, PowerPoint, ExamView, and pdf formats. Prices are negotiable, depending on the time required to generate what you need. I have lessons and worked out solutions to all of my review problems available in free videos via my youtube channel, http://www.youtube.com/mrstotorica, should you wish to preview the quality of materials that I generate.
