I have been working directly with children since high school when I began volunteering with my church's VBS program. I knew by the time I graduated from West Rowan High School in 2007, I was called to teach. During my undergraduate studies at Catawba College, I was given the opportunity to travel across the Eastern US to visit schools in urban areas much different than my hometown of Salisbury. During my college career I also worked as an overnight summer camp counselor for two summers. This two summers provided me with memorable experiences, great friends, and lots of hands on classroom management ideas. I completed my student teaching with a 5th grade class that had been granted 1:1 technology. Again, after many great experiences, I had a plethora of new ideas ready to implement in my own classroom! After graduation, I was hired to teach Kindergarten and after a successful first year I was moved to 2nd grade. I currently teach 2nd grade a high-poverty area in northern NC. I love my students with all my heart, and I have discovered that they more than most, need engaging, hands on, and exciting activities.
I love any engaging, hands on, ACTIVE activity for students. I try to keep in mind that my students are still children, and their little bodies need to move, stretch and experience the world around them.
