I've been a second-career chemistry teacher of high school students for an online, cyber charter school since 2010. For seven years prior to that, though, I taught introductory college chemistry at Penn State University as a graduate student and traveled internationally to support clients in basic chromatography theory for a company in which I served as an R&D chemist. While teaching chemistry is interesting and important to me, I realize that studying it may not be the most interesting and important aspect of my students' lives. The content, they report, can be inherently boring. I believe that it's my job to transform the content, delivering it in a way that demonstrates relevance and supports transfer of key ideas in their everyday lives. Ultimately, it's my goal to prepare students to become responsible, informed citizens capable of evaluating arguments and using scientific principles to guide their decisions. Additionally, as one of the most challenging courses in high school, I seek to constantly motivate and inspire a growth mindset in my chemistry students, providing multiple opportunities for them to take risks and make mistakes an in effort to demonstrate the manner in which practice makes progress. Each of the lessons and lesson resources in my store include the following: • a PreQuiz or "Before Class Activity" to activate and assess prior knowledge. • a "Word Wall" which showcases vocabulary that is central to the lesson content. • an independent or small group activity which allows (1) students to create artifacts as evidence of their learning and (2) teachers to review main ideas with the whole group. • detailed answer keys for the outlined activities. • formative assessment of mastery. By incorporating these elements to varying degrees, I've been able to really get to know my students' abilities like never before! They enjoy attending class, largey because they know that they will never sit through 50 minutes of lecture.

Until every one of my students is able to work through the content and achieve their goals, I cannot rest. My mind is always working to rethink the content and revisit documented curricular and instructional best practices in an effort to improve. My principal has, in fact, remarked that reflection is my most valuable asset as a teacher. I'm not sure this attribute -- the tendency to forever look for flaws in order to fix them -- comes naturally to many people; perhaps I received a double portion! It is to that end that I'm launching a blog for physical science and chemistry teachers designed to comment on my existing lessons, examine new strategies, and plan for improvement as time always ticks toward the next year. I will share it all with you! In the end, I hope to extract my best practices, strategies, and resources to create courses for aspiring and established science teachers as they seek to serve with excellence in their respective programs.
