Slavery is a difficult topic to teach young children because many cannot fathom living in a world when slavery existed. Scholastic did a beautiful job creating a book that is very child friendly, yet still hits the very important details about how

Ken Burns has wonderful documentaries and I have found that I can use many in my classroom. Creating questionnaires is time consuming, however, for some films, needed, so you know students are paying attention to what you would like them to learn.

Where the Red Fern Grows is a classic novel that I am sure many of us can remember reading in our younger years. Billy's relationship with his dogs Old Dan and Little Ann is one that tugs at our heart strings. I found that this book was too long

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have taught fifth grade for nine years. I absolutely love reading and social studies. I have to say they are my favorite to teach! One of my favorite books to read with my students is Petey, by Ben Mikaelsen. The students take a couple chapters to get hooked, but after that, there is usually moaning involved when we have to stop reading! It was because of this book that I found this website. One of my dear friends always told me to work smarter not harder. This website is truly amazing!

MY TEACHING STYLE

A student is not going to learn anything from you until they know you care more about them as an individual and see their personal struggles. -------------- I truly believe that a student will learn more through service and hands on experience than they will using just a text book and worksheets. Yes, these are important things, however, getting our youth out into their community and connecting curriculum to those experiences, in my opinion, will leave more of a lasting imprint.
