I began my journey by student teaching in New Zealand, where I learned what it looks like when children love learning. The third graders in New Zealand were highly motivated and excited about each school day. When I graduated I worked with first and second grade until I was hired as a fifth grade teacher. I set my goal high, as I wanted to instill the same love of learning I experienced during my student teaching in my future students. I spent three years in a Title 1 school in Baltimore County, before voluntarily transferring to a school closer to my home. I am now in my sixth year of teaching. This year I have an amazing second grade group. We have explored “The Daily Five” this year and it has changed my life! The children are so independent and have made leaps and bounds of progress this year. In addition to teaching, I am working on my Master’s Degree in Reading, I have been co-writing curriculum with the English Language Arts office in our county, and I was nominated for Teacher of the Year! I am looking forward to sharing resources that I find useful in my own classroom.
During reading and math I spend time informally assessing students so I can meet their individual needs for each Common Core standard. Small group instruction is what drives my day.
