I have been teaching for 24 years in self contained classrooms. I taught kindergarten for my first six years and the last eighteen in third grade. I have worked on committees creating curriculum and have presented at the No Child Left Behind Conference in Illinois several times. I am on the School Improvement Team for my district working with curriculum and other academic issues. Currently, we are creating math and ELA curriculum. At one time, my school used a standards/performance based report card that the team created. In most cases we do not use text books, however, we do have a reading anthology that allows us to have common literature for skill work.
I have been using a workshop approach to teaching reading and language for many years. I allow each child to proceed at his or her own pace with careful attention to areas of weakness and those of strength. Lessons that I use fit my entire classroom with varying levels of proficiency expected. Rubrics and anecdotal record keeping allow me to monitor progress and achievement. Because I helped to create a standards based report card that my school used for several years, my teaching continues to reflect the thinking that made that report card possible. Currently, I must attach letter grades to my students' achievement, therefore I have created rubrics that allow for that method of reporting. In reading, I use a combination of whole class instruction, guided reading, and independent reading. My students use the reading anthology in whole class instructional times and read from book boxes for their independent reading. I choose the books that are used for guided reading with flexible grouping depending on the needs of the children. I use a similar approach to teaching writing and language with a combination of strategies. I prefer authentic writing so that the students are more invested in the results of their pieces. With the advent of Common Core state standards and the short length of time that I have been using it, my teaching is undergoing some change. I remain dedicated to my students and their needs in the realm of the state guidelines.
I have received district level awards.
I am a graduate of McKendree College in Lebanon IL. I also received a Masters Degree, but McKendree College became McKendree University by that time.
