I wrote this assessment after teaching a brief "crash course" in US History/Civics for my ESOL students. This would work well for prepping for required state assessments, as well as for GED/Citizenship test practice.

This puzzle works well as a preview of basic Civics/Government/Social Studies vocabulary. It could be used as a "sponge"/"bell ringer"/"warm-up" activity as well. With my ESOL students, I usually preview the words twice aloud in a "call and

I use this with two other Civics practice sheets. This works well for prepping for required state tests or the US Citizenship test. My ESOL refugee students need a lot of practice with basic vocabulary. That is why I have them alphabetize their

I like to use puzzles like this as "warm up" exercises or "sponge" activities. My ESOL students really enjoy previewing new vocabulary this way. Once I've handed out the word search, we preview the vocab words out loud in a "Call and Response"

This is great for assessing basic map skills/world geography recall. It could be used on its own or as an "open-book quiz" while looking at a map. Also, good as a simple "I-Search" using the computer. It would teach them to focus on their Geo

This is a fun chart to have students fill out. It gets them to differentiate between concrete and abstract nouns. I use this sheet two times during the year: during the Parts of Speech unit in the fall, then again when prepping for the state test

This is a fun and productive way to teach students about famous historical or cultural figures while searching for "abstract nouns" inside famous quotes. My students really seem to enjoy this assignment. It ties in well with people they may have

Here is a quick assessment that covers 26 words from Chapter One of the book "Guns, Germs, and Steel." Many schools use this in World History or AP World History. It is also on many summer reading lists.

TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have worked in the field of education for over ten years. I have been a private tutor, a curriculum writer, an inner-city Reading and ELA teacher, a debate coach, a soccer coach, and a softball coach. Currently I teach ESOL/ELA/Reading/Social Studies to refugees (ages 12-19) from South America, Asia, Africa, and the Middle East.

MY TEACHING STYLE

Every day I tell my students to think of school like a "Quiz Show." It's a game they can win! I tell them to think of me as their "Vocab Coach." If they trust me and listen well, then it's a "win/win" situation all around.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

Shining Moments: Hearing from past students when they "rock" on the SAT test or get accepted into college. Being invited to my (past/present) students' soccer games or music recitals.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

BS in Liberal Arts, Central Michigan University and an MA in English Literature, Central Michigan University

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

When I am not teaching, I enjoy roller blading, hiking, reading, and playing with my two rescue dogs.
