TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I've been an educator for 20 years and have taught many subjects at many levels---from PreK to college! My areas of expertise are teaching reading, ESL, and elementary education. I also served as a literacy coach for an elementary school. I currently work as an instructional designer for a small college. I enjoy the challenge of designing instruction for teachers on TPT, too! I've been slowly revisiting all my K-12 material that I created over the years and updating it to sell on TPT. It's a labor of love.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I use positive reinforcement to enhance learning. For instance, I use the term "smart mistakes" to refer to errors based on preconceived rules such as regular verb formation applied incorrectly to irregular verbs or the application of false cognates to a second language. I strive to recognize the source of the student's mistake, and then guide them (scaffolding) to the correct response. In my opinion, students respond favorably to positive remarks especially with error correction.

HONORS/AWARDS/SHINING TEACHER MOMENT

*U.S. Peace Corps, Honduras, Central America; *Partners to the Americas Teacher Exchange, Coban, Guatemala; *U.S. English Teaching Fellow, Mozambique, Africa; *TESOL Travel Grant and Professional Development Award; *Virtual Student Foreign Service Internship, U.S. Office of Interest, Havana, Cuba; *Kappa Delta Pi: International Honor Society; *Dr. Chandru Hiremath Memorial Endowed Award in Instructional Design Development

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I have a doctorate in instructional design. I have a masters in Teaching English as a Second Language. I have a current PK-12 bilingual (Spanish/ESL) teaching certificate and elementary teaching credential from the California Commission on Teaching. I possess current K-5 teaching certification in Alabama, too.
