This will be my second year teaching 5th grade in the upcoming school year. The past year was an eye-opening experience in the realm that my own students have to be the "parent". Many of my students had to take care of younger siblings at the age of 11. I found that the best way to teach my students was to get on a personal level with them.
Recently, I read a book called "Teach Like a Pirate". This book changed my entire teaching style. I realized that my lessons were dull and not engaging at all. Once I read this book, I studied hard on how to make my lessons more engaging and to get the students asking questions. I embedded a hook into each of my lessons. This can be as simple as having some type of item in the classroom when the students enter or it can be as difficult as having the students interact with an escape room activity. My students have called me "the crazy teacher" on several occasions, but at the end of the year, I realized that the students retained more information than I thought they would.
Yet to be added
I graduated from Murray State University with a bachelors degree in Middle School Education and an emphasis in Science and Social Studies. Within the next two years, I will begin my journey to complete my masters degree in Special Education. Once that is completed, I will turn to my next journey, and that is to become an administrator that is passionate about my school, staff, and ultimately my students.
I have a beautiful wife named Mallory and an amazing daughter who is less than one year old. Whenever I am not in the classroom being my crazy self, I am on the lake with my family or taking my wife on a date!
