I taught 5th grade ESL (SEI) immersion and K-6 ESL pull-out in public schools until I had my first child. I home-schooled my own children in reading, religious studies, and foreign language when they were younger. Then, I taught art at a religious day school, using my B.S. in Communication and Fine Arts. As the school grew immensely, so did the art position, but I wanted only part-time work. I switched positions and became the elementary reading interventionist at the school, using my M.Ed in Curriculum and Instruction and Reading Endorsement. Now, I tutor privately, create educational products for my store, and raise my children!
The idea put forth by ESL guru Stephen Krashen, as well as neuroscientists, is that students often put up an invisible, non-verbal, emotional wall that blocks their learning. Our job as educators is to "lower the affective filter" so learning can take place. My educational resources are brain-based, fun, engaging, and most importantly - effective! Students are supported, not threatened by the activities, and feel motivated with my educational games and hands-on activities, which is the way to lower the affective filter. Students have different learning styles, life experiences, abilities, and fears when they walk into a classroom. Therefore, my lessons use various modalities to help students acquire the learning in several different ways. And, the latest brain research shows that using multiple parts of the brain while learning, is a most effective, fastest way to learn, rather than sitting still or doing skill-and-drill.
