We met while teaching second grade and found out quickly that we had similar teaching styles. Dana's favorite subject is math and Kathy's is reading, so we balanced each other out and always shared lots of ideas. Before teaching second grade Dana spent time as a math tutor. We taught second grade together for 6 years. Now Kathy is a reading specialist for grades k to 6 and Dana is a stay at home mom.
Authentic hands-on learning is the key to any great lesson. Getting students involved in every lesson allows them to remember the concepts being taught while having fun!
We presented our handbook Using Children's Literature to Teach Mathematics at the Keystone State Reading Association conference in Oct. 2012.
