I've taught for 14 years - from 7th grade to graduate school. As a high school teacher, I taught global history, participation in government, and economics. In middle school, I supported reading teachers by designing a writing curriculum.Focus areas include argumentative writing, preparing students for common core assessments, and students' expression via writing and presentation (mini-units range from poetry to commentary, community advocacy, and analytic writing).
Students do not learn, grow, and develop by test prep alone. Without attention to their interests, experiences, and perspectives, we might prepare them for tests they take one time in their life, but very little beyond. Academic preparation without attention to students' unique needs detrimentally impacts students' well-being. I strive to develop class communities. I want a classroom to be a place where teacher and students - are heard, can make mistakes and grow, where effort is acknowledged, critical thinking is a part of each lesson, and where children's laughter, play, and curiosity are as important as high expectations and preparation for the future.
