While I completed my student teacher with freshman biology students, my first teaching job was for 7th grade aquatic science. 16 years later, I still love being in the middle.
The most important aspect of teaching is establishing a solid relationship with my students. I use the term facilitator more often than teacher because I am responsible for creating the environment in which my students are responsible for themselves and for their own learning. They must have a safe place where it is acceptable to take academic risks. This environment involves the students learning from the teacher, the students learning from each other, and just as importantly, the teacher learning from the students.
