I have taught classes from Kindergarten all the way through 8th grade (as well as tutored students through College Algebra, Algebra 2, and Calculus). I have dabbled in subjects from 1st grade gifted math to 8th grade advanced physical science; from kindergarten ESE to gifted 6th and 7th grade math. This vast assortment of experiences has given me great insight into what works best with all types of students and different types of learners. What I have found to work best with ALL students, is to bring in real life situations or current themes to my every day lessons. This keeps them engaged. I am currently teaching 5th grade math, and I start every day with a themed Warm Up on PowerPoint. These warm ups can be related to a current movie, sports team, singer, or even a popular app. I take the theme and use it to create questions that will engage the students. My word problems will be based on the theme, as well as whatever topic we are covering in class.
My teaching is heavily reliant on technology. I create PowerPoints to accompany almost everything I teach. Not just regular boring slideshows, but ones that engage the students and keep them involved. My main goal is to engage my students by bringing in real life themes and topics that interest them and keep them motivated to learn.
