MY TEACHING STYLE

My teaching training and experience has given me a relaxed, but structured approach in the classroom. Using relevant lead-ins, eliciting ideas and personalising classes to the students' interests, both enables me to engage with my students, and my students to engage with their work. Alongside teaching English, I also teach tessellation workshops. I create materials that allow students to understand the basic principles, follow step by step guides and develop their own ideas into patterns which they can then apply in different mediums to different surfaces or objects. These workshops utilise a similar approach in terms of structure and engaging students, but with a much more practical emphasis.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

I studied Industrial Design and Technology at Loughborough University, UK and went on to work as a product designer for 10 years. This involved resolving functional and aesthetic problems with two and three dimensional geometry. I started teaching in 2011, and in 2012 I discovered the mathematical art of M. C. Escher and his work in tessellation. Immediately, I became fascinated by the imagery and its underlying geometric principles. I studied the rules and started creating tessellations of my own. In 2013, I licensed two tessellations to a London fabric house and held my first exhibition. I went on to teach tessellation workshops at a local school and following a second exhibition in 2015, I set up Tessellation Art. Currently I work part time as an English teacher in Prague and devote the rest of my time to new Tessellation Art projects. I record my latest developments on my website, including artwork, animation, articles, exhibitions and my step-by-step design process.
