Immediately following college, I was hired on as the Enrichment teacher for a private school in Hamilton, Ohio where I taught children aged 3-6 years old. I taught there for two wonderful years. In relations to my efforts in Haiti, I created a home school curriculum in Haitian Creole where the parents can help educate their never-schooled children in the comfort of their own home. The lessons covered in the curriculum are letter recognition, sound recognition, number recognition, color and shape recognition, basic counting, simple addition, letter/sound blending, basic word recognition, and English.
I have a holistic, hands-on teaching style. When I am planning my lessons, I incorporate more than on subject area into each lesson as well as all three learning styles- auditory, visual, and kinesthetic. This can be best seen in my penguin shapes assessment :-) I also incorporate singing and movement into as many lessons as possible. Research shows that music and movement help increase learning ability as well as retention. Lastly, my teaching style is flexible. Students' focus and interests are constantly changing. Thus, I continuously adapt my classroom and lessons to most benefit the children.
I was selected for the Undergraduate Summer Scholars program my senior year in college. I received funding to perform qualitative research in Haiti based on parents' perceptions of the quality of schooling in rural Haiti. I was also selected to attend the Clinton Global Initiative University in San Diego, California where my colleagues and I shared our efforts to help fight the cholera outbreak in Haiti.
I first attended Miami University of Ohio as an Early Childhood Education major. I completed the first cohort in early language with field experience in a preschool HeadStart program. The following year, I changed my major to Family Studies with a focus on child development. In 2011, I graduated from Miami University with a B.S. in Family Studies. Since then, I have accrued 25+ hours of SUTQ training in various fields. Currently, I am taking online classes to become certified in TESOL and to receive my CDA.
Some of my favorite hobbies are traveling, biking, roller blading, scrapbooking, DIY projects around the house, antique shopping, listening to my record player, and reading my old classic novels. As I said that I love traveling, I have been to 36 US states, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and Haiti. I am in the process of starting my own non-profit organization in Haiti that focuses on helping close the education gap for primary school-aged children in rural Haiti.
