TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Lisa Phillips is an author, blog journalist, marketer, mentor and business owner. She currently lives and works in Toronto, Canada and has over 16 years experience as an arts and leadership educator. Her passion for helping young people achieve success in all aspects of their lives inspired Lisa to publish her first book, The Artistic Edge: 7 Skills Children Need to Succeed in an Increasingly Right Brain World. With the Foreword written by Raymond Aaron (New York Times bestselling author of Chicken Soup for the Parent’s Soul), the book explores the impact arts participation has on the success of the current generation. The Artistic Edge reveals creativity and leadership as crucial skills for today’s young people to develop in order to compete in the global job market. In addition to her 10 years as a summer Camp Director, Lisa has worked in both film and television; has taught Musical Theatre to children and youth for 11 years; and has worked for several not-for-profit organizations. She holds a degree in Psychology along with post-graduate certificates in Arts Administration and Children’s Mental Health. Most recently, Lisa has combined her entrepreneurial spirit and passion for marketing to work with a business coaching company and an international parenting program. Since her book was published in late October 2012, Lisa’s work and opinions have gone viral. She’s written three articles for The Washington Post, which together have reached over 140,000 social media shares. For National Arts Advocacy Day in the U.S.A., Lisa had the honour of joining world-renowned cellist, Yo-Yo Ma, and Guns N’ Roses drummer, Matt Sorum, in an Americans for the Arts panel discussion about the importance of the arts. She’s also been featured on Rhino OnAir, Global TV, Americans for the Arts, The Toronto Star and dozens of arts and leadership websites around the world. To even further propel her message on the necessity of arts and leadership education, Lisa regularly publishes her own blog posts on The Artistic Edge’s website. The Artistic Edge also provides business and marketing coaching for arts professionals which has become another passion of Lisa’s. Lisa speaks throughout North America to arts commissions, school boards and parenting groups about why the arts are the ideal vehicle to teach 21st century success skills. She has committed her professional career to bringing arts education and leadership development to thousands of children throughout North America and beyond.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

REVIEWS FOR THE ARTISTIC EDGE BOOK: “I personally and passionately believe this book is a MUST READ for ALL teachers because it provides inspiring and manageable ways to bring the arts to life in all classrooms.” – Cyndi Wells, Lead Coach & Fine Arts Facilitator Albemarle County Public Schools “This wonderful, intelligent, highly readable book is a persuasive and passionate explanation of precisely why experiences in the arts should be an essential part of every child’s education. It’s strongly recommended for parents and professionals who prepare young people for success in life.” – Michael Brandwein, Educator & Bestselling author “Anyone with a vested interest in the future of our children must read this book!” – Raymond Aaron, New York Times bestselling author Chicken Soup for the Parents Soul “The art of having a successful life is now revealed. Lisa Phillips explains clearly and without doubt which skills are needed to move confidently, joyful and purposeful through life. The Artistic Edge is a must read and a very welcome and beautiful addition in support of the arts in general and an arts education in particular!” – Thierry Dufay, The Netherlands Arts, Culture and Education Forum “Thank you for writing this book, Lisa. You’re talking about something that should be shouted from the tops of all of our ivory towers!” – Cathy Elliott, DAREarts “Lisa Phillips’ points about creativity giving students a competitive edge in the future should be something every school district and every educational administrator takes to heart. We’re going to be referencing this work quite a bit in the next year as we take a hard look at our curricular approach.” – Derek McCaw, Arts Educator “Incredibly informative. Wish I had come upon this dynamite little book when first published in 2012. As an art educator I would advise all art educators to read this book and create their own referral notes for consistent reminders. The book contains a plethora of info for positive character training through teaching and engaging art experiences for our country’s future leaders. As a proponent for arts education the author provided valuable in for arts advocacy. The “Artistic Edge” adds myriad info for my volunteerism in education outreach at my local area Acadiana Center for the Arts. Kudos to Lisa Phillips! I look forward to her next book on the same subject.” – Elizabeth Calais
