TEACHING EXPERIENCE

Greetings! I am a middle school band director in a Title 1 school. I create most of my own resources to help my students understand music concepts, and I thought maybe they could be helpful to some of you. I have been teaching for 8 years.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I believe that experience is the key to all learning. Music theory by itself is fine, but true understanding comes with playing a piece of music where the students experiences that ignoring the key signature will make the music sound wrong. Physics is great, but students won't really understand centrifugal force until they are driving fast around a curve and turn into the curve to feel the pull that keeps them from crashing. Grammar and punctuation studies are great, but they won't understand or care until someone texts them: "Let's eat mom," instead of "Let's eat, mom." So, I believe experience is the very best teacher. It makes impressions on students' minds and lets them become believers in what we want to teach them.
