I have taught middle school English, including general and special education for over 5 years at a public school in the Bronx, New York. With many of my students being below reading level, I needed to find ways to engage them and help them read grade level-text, while raising their reading levels! After much trial and error came much success, with my incoming students coming in at 10% proficiency on the state exam and leaving with over 50% proficiency. I have recently moved to Oklahoma where I am teaching English, Oklahoma History, Earth Science, math, and tutoring various students! From the Boogie down Bronx to the midwest and south, tt has been an incredible journey and I love what I do!
My teaching style could be summed up with this poem I wrote: I yearn to create readers, writers, and confident individuals Every child needs a cheerleader, I strive to be that, as they walk through my door, A bright, colorful rug in the middle of the floor, Where thirteen-year-olds (yes, thirteen-year-olds) run for a read aloud. We debate “What is Love” or “The Art of Manipulation” We sing and dance about annotating a text To teach, I rap and create video remixes of my students’ favorite songs A school community is a home where we all belong A family all accepted for who we truly are. You will find me, in my classroom, growing with my students which affirms my unwavering belief: I was born to teach.
