My experience in teaching goes back more than 30 years when I started teaching swimming lessons in high school. As irrelevant as that sounds, it laid the foundation for a life-long love of teaching. Fast forward a few more years through my journalism degree, my experience working as an editor at Houghton Mifflin Harcourt in the secondary English department, to today, as a homeschooling mom of four and a publisher of a magazine written entirely by kids, and you've got a recipe of someone uber-passionate about inspiring kids.
For the last 20 years, I have guided our homeschooling family on an adventurous journey that has consistently inspired the development of out-of-the-box thinking and common sense. By using interactive, hands-on and real-world applications, I've seen not only my kids but hundreds of others, blossom with confidence and skill. The development of The Bunk Room magazine in 2008, originally created by my two sons in their bunk beds one night, is a bright example of that style. I took their idea and ran with it creating a plethora of teachable moments for my kids by publishing the magazine. In a nutshell, at the ages of 8-10-12-14, my kids needed to up their game in writing and the concept of a magazine written entirely by kids made complete sense to me. Now, my kids and kids throughout the world have an opportunity to relevantly write for publication. It seemed practical that if kids were going to put so much effort into their writing, it needn't be buried in a notebook for only the teacher to read.
