I’m an Art and English teacher through and through. I currently teach English, grades 9-12, including small group and advisory instruction for second language learners. I’ve taught visual art, performing art, literary art, performance art…you name it. I’ve taught multiple disciplines to young people aged three to 23 and I believe that my energy and enthusiasm for the subjects I teach have made it possible for me to build relationships with students of all ages and from very diverse backgrounds. It’s important for me to be passionate about what I do which is why I’ve worked in the arts for so long and why I’ve decided to focus on arts-based, and arts-integrated, instruction for language learners.
I’ve been teaching artistic disciplines longer than I’ve been teaching English, so I knew that arts-based activities were going to be involved in my teaching methods. In addition, I’ve noticed that the demographic I serve is MUCH more inclined to finish an English assignment if there is something artsy involved. My primary objective in teaching is to provide opportunities for students to engage in activities that are meaningful to them, fostering a genuine desire to acquire transferable knowledge. I believe every student has something unique to offer and they need encouragement and support to realize their potential. As a teacher, I strive to build meaningful relationships with my students and be aware of their individual learning needs. My classroom is a place that encourages freedom of thought and expression with the hope of eliminating inhibitions about learning. I believe in discussing real-life experiences and situations with students and guiding them to understand the purpose of their education, focusing on fostering self-worth and creativity. As a facilitator of learning, my job is to provide the information and resources that will enable students to discover what their future holds.

I have a Bachelor of Arts in Theatre and Journalism from the University of Nevada, Reno, and a Master of Arts in Secondary Education from Sierra Nevada College. While obtaining my Master's degree, I was so engaged and inspired during my TESL certification that I decided to combine my love for English and the arts and create a program aimed toward supporting second and/or foreign language learning.
