My teaching career thus far has centralized around urban education and curriculum creation that inspires the desire to learn. My students come to me from a variety of backgrounds and educational levels and I must create and provide curriculum that meets their multiple learning needs and interests. In the 13 years I have been teaching, I have relied on self made curriculum, partaking in multiple action research projects, seminars, workshops and programs in which I received instruction on how to create, maintain and apply high quality curriculum in the high needs classroom.
My teaching style can be described as a Warm/Strict Coaching Mentality. I am HUGE practitioner of Growth Mindset and work to create the classroom environment and curriculum to support authentic, intellectual development. My students and their learning are at the center of my instruction; while I facilitate their learning opportunities with structure and routine, providing them with high interest lessons that teach skill and build academic confidence. I am big on using graphic organizers and scaffolded instruction with data collection to ensure that all of my students are learning and making the gains necessary for academic success.
My students have grown on average 2 - 5% per year on school, district and national assessment since 2004. I was a Golden Apple Teacher Nominee in 2009 and 2012.
I received my undergrad in English Education from Illinois State University in 2004. I earned my Masters in Educational Leadership in 2011.
I am currently working at Fortune Schools opening our very first Early College High School in which students will earn their Associates Degree upon High School Graduation. I am a full time classroom teacher and the head of ELA Instruction, Curriculum and Assessment at Fortune Early College High School.
