My first year as a teacher was in a self-contained special education classroom where I taught students with a variety of special needs--Learning Disorders, Autism, Orthopedic Impairment, Down Syndrome, Speech Impairment, Intellectual Disability. For the last two years I have taught at a Behavioral Unit for students with special needs. These students come to our campus for a short time to work on behavioral problems that keep them from succeeding in their regular schools and classrooms.
I prefer to teach in one-on-one or small group settings. As a self-contained special education teacher, this is generally the case. I prefer to introduce new material to students one-on-one so that I can create activities that are unique to each student's learning styles.
