TEACHING EXPERIENCE

I have more than 20 years experience teaching in inner city schools early college and currently working to implement innovative design strategies in a traditional school. I have taught grades 6-12 at different points during my teaching career including working with EC students, remedial reading, Honors, Advanced Placement, International Baccalaureate, and even GED courses.

MY TEACHING STYLE

I've tried lots of different approaches, but I've found students thrive when I step to the side and act as a facilitator instead. It's more work front loading but it's so much more rewarding to are the students discovering, investigating, and creating.

MY OWN EDUCATIONAL HISTORY

I received my BS in English, Secondary Education with a minor in Psychology from Appalachian State University and my MSA from Western Carolina University and most importantly more than 20 years experience learning from colleagues and growing as an educator.

ADDITIONAL BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

The majority of my teaching career has been teaching high school students who are typically labeled as "at-risk". I understand the difficulties in engaging students who don't see the purpose in many of their classes or understand how their classes relate to them or their future. My students taught me what works and what doesn't, and my goal is to share my lesson plans and project guides that will help other teachers use what I've learned. It's all about the new three "Rs" in education- relationships, rigor and relevance.
